With over 600 events in 43 countries, the EU Sustainable Energy Week is proving its reputation as the reference event for sustainable energy issues across Europe, and beyond. On Tuesday 12 April Energy Commissioner Oettinger will kick-off the Sustainable Energy Week with an opening conference to address key issues such as energy efficiency. Over 30.000 attendees will participate across Europe.

On Tuesday, 12 April the six overall winners of the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards will be announced during a ceremony in the heart of Brussels in the framework of the European Union Sustainable Energy Week 2011. The awards recognize outstanding European renewable energy or energy efficiency projects with a high replication potential and impact. With more than 1,000 project promoters from all EU Member States, as well as non-EU countries in Asia, Africa, and North America, the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards competition has accumulated a network of promoting bodies, consisting of public administrations, private companies, universities, NGOs and other types of associations.

Some 303 initiatives are competing in this year’s Awards competition, distributed across six categories, namely Communicating, Learning, Living, Producing, Consuming and Travelling. Winning projects are showcased as examples of sustainable energy excellence. They are set to inspire other energy actors throughout Europe to follow suit.

Other topics covered during the Week will include energy-efficient buildings, products and appliances, renewable energy solutions (e.g. biomass, solar and wind energy), low-carbon technologies and sustainable urban mobility.

On Wednesday 13 April Energy Commissioner Oettinger will fire the starting shot for a race of energy-labelled fridges, demonstrating the benefits of energy efficiency.
