The Festival is organized around two major events: an international competition and a calendar of arts-related events.
The international, national, and regional design community – including, but not limited to, artists of all disciplines, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and film makers – are invited to submit unique and engaging proposals for installations and performances that engage places of nature, art, and culture in transforming the post-industrial American City. Entrants are encouraged to collaborate with individuals outside their disciplines to create outdoor site-specific installations and environmental sculpture. Partnering with schools, community groups, or arts organizations is also encouraged. College students in the last year of design related programs of study are also eligible to apply. The selection jury is composed of residents, artists, experts, and community leaders and chaired by Dr. H. Ellis Finger, director of Lafayette College’s Williams Center for the Arts. Lucienne Di Biase Dooley, architect, is the Festival’s organizing curator.
As a result of the competition, a selection committee will select up to 16 site-specific installations.
The Festival will run from mid April to mid October 2011. A series of events including self-guided and guided tours of the site installations, lectures, art exhibitions, music and dance performances will be scheduled throughout the duration of the festival.
The Arts of Urban Environments Festival will join with numerous other City events including but not limited to: Farmer’s Market, Movies at the Mill, Riverside Festival.
